How do I write an obituary? How do I write your obituary? As I stand vigil at my grandmas beside, this is all I can think of. I think only of how much I will miss her. How do I articulate the gravity of the many sacrifices she made to secure a wealthy upbringing for three generations of children. I don't speak of material wealth but the kind of wealth you only ever know you had when it is gone. I guess I will start with the legacy she left behind.
Shanna Dee Nielson passed away on Friday, June 14th from respiratory complications related to COPD. She was preceded in death by her father and mother Harold Dean Davidson and Neta Barney, her brother-in-law Jay Dee Walker, nephews Darren Scott Conder and Charles Lee Bunch, her grandson Chad David Nielson, and her great grandson Alexander Ross Nielson. Shanna is survived by her husband Ronald Deloy Nielson, her son David Ronald (Kerri) Nielson, her three sisters Shirley Dean (Douglas J) Conder, Sandra Day Walker, Dana Jean (Glen Elemer) Bond. Grandson Cody J (Ashley) Nielson, parents of Hayden James Nielson and Dylan Gabriel Nielson. Grandson Cassey Amen (Amy Merlyn) Nielson, parents of Madalyn Claire Nielson, Liam David Nielson, and Noah Ammon Nielson. Granddaughter Tawni Darlene (Brandon Rick) Clark, parents of Hailey Antenette Gundersen, Tristin Jesse Clark, and Austin Dakota Clark. Grandson Tyler Dane Nielson (Theresa Emily Knueppel mother of Brooklyn Emily Meachem) and many other nieces and nephews.
My grandma left a large legacy behind and was only able to accomplish it by sacrificing her passions for the arts. Shanna knew how to cross-stitch, crochet, quilt, and had an uncanny ability to make her novice art work look, not only beautiful but masterfully rendered. She was one of the few people who could pick up something new and make it look like she had been doing it for years. A true Jack of all Trades. She also had a deep love of dance and was apart of the Intermountain Country Dance Association. In her early years she served on her high school pep club and had a great love for her faith with the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints where she served as the Chorister of her ward. She also served as president of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers - Granger Chapter.
To know Shanna as a granddaughter has been one of the biggest blessings I have had in my life. She taught me self respect, she showed me how hard work pays off. She was someone I looked up to. I learned to chase my passions from her, I even learned how stubborn we can be as well. In many ways I wish I could share how being her granddaughter changed my life. I wish you could know her as I knew her. I wish I could know her as others have known her. Known her as a sister, known her as a friend, known her as a daughter, known her as a mother, and known her as so many of the other roles she played in so many of our lives. My grandmother was a strong woman, a passionate woman, a stubborn woman, a caring woman, and a religious woman. All of which she was very proud of, that I am very proud of. I am proud to have come from her legacy.
Grandma, Shanna, mother, daughter, wife, friend, sister, aunt; regardless of your title you will be missed, your absence will be felt, your love will live on. Rest in Peace Shanna Dee Nielson, grandma.
