Obituary of Katherine Leyba
Born June 23, 1932 - March 24, 2019
Katherine passed away with family members by her side.
She is survived by her children, Martin, Rodney, Barbara, Michael and Katherine and their families, many nieces and nephews and extended family. Preceded in death by two sons, Jesse and Ismael. She has 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Katherine attended Jordan High School "The Beet Diggers". She owned her own restaurant named El Sahuro Cafe in Stockton, California. She was a Master teacher at Ocean Park Community Center in Santa Monica, California. She worked at the Tampico Restaurant with her sister Lucille and brother-in-law John Loumis Sr where she met Nat King Cole. Mom did Spanish dancing and played her castanets.
In 1988 mom meet Leo Buscaglia in person in Santa Monica, California.
She was known for her artwork. She taught her grandchildren, especially Rodney Jr. Katherine's favorite hobby was cooking. She has passed Greek recipes that were taught to her by Thia Rosie and Thia Virginia. Greek food is her favorite. These recipes have been passed to her children and grandchildren and will continue to be passed to Great-grandchildren.
In Stockton, California mom met Senator Robert Kennedy and Caesar Chavez at the airport, then they went to Stockton Junior High to talk to the students.
There will be a dinner from 1-3pm at the Heritage Baptist Church. 1502 Walnut Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah 84116. (400 North & 1500 West) Food can be take here by 12:00pm to Candy Fernandez who is in charge of the kitchen.
Funeral Services will be held at IPS Mortuary & Crematory. 4555 South Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, Utah 84123 from 5-7pm.
